Don’t attempt the following

  • First, don’t use your home vacuum, since electrical shock may result, as well as certain damage to the equipment itself.
  • Second, don’t place newspapers in traffic areas to walk on, since newspaper ink transfers easily to the wet carpet fibers and may result in permanent staining.
  • Third, don’t walk on the carpet any more than necessary. This will keep the damage from spreading to unaffected areas.

Causes of water damage

Water and flood damage can occur in several ways. In some cases, water pipes within your building’s infrastructure will break, or the rubber hoses connected to your washing machine or dishwashers will break down over time. Especially, small leaks, standing water, and even abnormally high levels of humidity can result in water damage.

Flooding can also be caused by rising water from outside or roof damage. Additionally, seasonal hurricanes, tornadoes, tropical storms, and other natural disasters are largely responsible for flooding throughout the Tri-County area.

Main causes:

  • Roof
  • Plumbing
  • Human error
  • Sewer backup
  • Groundwater intrusion

Consequences of water damage

Every minute counts after the water has infiltrated a structure because damage from water increases exponentially over time.

Within minutes:

  • Water spreads rapidly to other areas, thereby rapidly increasing the scope and cost of the loss
  • Damage to furniture, especially antique, and may stain carpet permanently
  • Moisture-sensitive furniture finishes discolor
  • Paper goods are ruined due to absorption, swelling, and warping

Within hours:

  • Furniture delaminates or swells, legs begin to split
  • Bacterial odor (sour) becomes apparent
  • Uncoated metal surfaces may tarnish
  • Papers sitting on desks and pictures hanging on walls may start to curl

Within days:

  • Fungi appear, along with a characteristic “musty” odor
  • Internal components in pianos and organs swell in the presence of condensed moisture from elevated humidity
  • Drywall swells and becomes more fragile
  • Uncoated metal surfaces begin to rust
  • Door and window casings swell and distort or delaminate
  • Wood decking, joists, and studs begin to swell, warp and split
  • Electronic components may malfunction
  • Occupants with respiratory problems or compromised immune systems could experience distress

If you have recently experienced water and flood damage to your home or business, Insurance Repair Specialists are here to help.

Categories of water damages

While water may start as a category 1, over time and contact with organic material(s) it will transition to category 2 and eventually 3. It is more important to recognize what the loss becomes than what it originated as.

  • Category 1: Clean water

Originates from a source that does not pose substantial harm to humans and does not flow through a contaminated area.

Examples: water supply lines, tub or sink overflow, broken toilet tanks.

  • Category 2: Gray water

Contains a significant level of contamination and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if consumed by or exposed to humans – discharge from washing machine or dishwasher, overflows from a toilet with some urine, sump pump failures, broken aquarium, and punctured water bed.

  • Category 3: Blackwater

Also, contains pathogenic agents and is grossly unsanitary – Sewage, toilet backflows, water that comes in over the ground.

In the event of Water Damage, do the following

  • Stay calm! Call Insurance Repair Specialists, Inc. right away: (954) 725-2895. We are available 24/7 365 days a year.
  • Make sure the water source is turned off. This will help contain the damage.
  • Turn off the breaker in the damaged area before you unplug or remove any electrical devices located on the wet floors.
  • Lift draperies away from wet carpet.
  • Loosely tie up upholstered furniture skirts which may get wet.
  • Remove books, shoes, paper goods, fabrics, potted plants, and other items that may be stained or stain on wet carpet.
  • Move any type of metal furniture from wet flooring.

It is important to select a capable, knowledgeable contractor to handle the drying process. Just look for accreditation with ASCR, the Association of Specialists in Cleaning and Restoration, or the IICRC, the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification. Both agencies certify contractors in the most up-to-date drying and mold-prevention techniques available. Preferably you will find a contractor with both affiliations, like Insurance Repair Specialists, Inc.
